Your Brain Was Not Designed for Infinite Information: Running Ancient Equipment on an Endless Feed
You are operating a Paleolithic cognitive system in an environment it never evolved for. The hardware is remarkable, but it was tuned for a world where new information was scarce and almost always useful—a rustle in the grass, a change in the weather, news from someone who walked a long way to deliver it. Connect that same equipment to an endless, algorithmically sorted feed and the mismatch shows up as distraction, low-grade fatigue, and a persistent sense of being behind. The problem is not a lack of discipline. It is a spec mismatch, and you can design around it.
The equipment you're actually working with
Two constraints matter most. First, capacity. The popular figure of "seven, plus or minus two" items, from George Miller's 1956 paper, has been revised down by psychologist Nelson Cowan to about four chunks of information held in the focus of attention at once. That is the real size of your mental workbench. Everything else is offloaded to notes, screens, or memory you have to reload.
Second, motivation. Your reward circuitry runs on dopamine, and research summarized in Molecular Psychiatry (2000) describes how novelty and unpredictable reward trigger dopamine signaling—with the anticipation of a payoff often more potent than the payoff itself. In a scarce environment, that bias toward "check what's new" paid off. In a feed that never ends and never fully satisfies, the same circuit keeps firing with nothing to show for it.
What the feed does to your attention
Gloria Mark's field research at UC Irvine measured this directly. In 2004, office workers stayed on a single screen for about 2.5 minutes on average before switching. By the late 2010s that had fallen to roughly 47 seconds, with half of all attention episodes lasting 40 seconds or less.
Switching is not free. Mark's work, widely cited in Johann Hari's Stolen Focus, found it takes an average of about 23 minutes to return to the original task after a diversion—and her subjects were interrupted, or interrupted themselves, every few minutes. Do that math and a workday can pass without a single stretch of uninterrupted thought.
This is partly by design. Aza Raskin, who built infinite scroll around 2006, has called it a "slot machine for the mind" and went on to co-found the Center for Humane Technology. The feed removes the natural stopping cues—the bottom of the page—that used to let you notice you were done.
Budget your attention like the limited resource it is
Treat attention as a fixed budget with concrete rules rather than something you top up with willpower.
- Turn off push notifications entirely. Not "important only"—off. Each ping is an invitation to spend 23 minutes you didn't plan to spend.
- Check email at 2–3 fixed times a day, for example 10:00, 13:00, and 16:00. In Mark's email-blackout study, participants who did this focused for longer and showed lower stress, measured through heart-rate variability.
- Work in protected blocks of 25–50 minutes, one task per block, with the phone in another room and the browser closed to a single tab. Because each interruption costs about 23 minutes of recovery, guarding one 45-minute block is worth more than reclaiming several scattered minutes.
- Name the switch out loud as it happens. Say "I'm opening a new tab" or "I'm picking up my phone." This "meta-awareness" makes an automatic reach into a decision you can cancel.
Recharge without scrolling, and declutter once
When you feel depleted, the feed is the worst possible break. Mark's data shows people recover better from a 10-minute rote task—tidying a desk, sorting files, washing dishes—or a 20-minute walk outdoors. Both let the focus-of-attention system idle instead of hammering it with more novelty.

After 30 days, reintroduce a tool only if it directly serves something you specifically value, and only in the way that serves it—"I use this app to message my three closest friends," not "I might miss something." Most things do not earn their way back, and you stop guessing.

Switch off the notifications, batch the email, guard a few real blocks of focus, walk instead of scroll, and run the declutter once. The feed was engineered against your attention.
